A Parable on Ego and Spiritual Clarity Once, a conceited nobleman visited a Sufi sage. Upon meeting, the nobleman sneered, "I hear you claim to enlighten souls, yet how can that be? Isn't each soul a mirror reflecting the divine? What could you possibly add to it?" The Sufi sage, invited the nobleman to his humble dwelling. He led him to a room where two mirrors hung. 1. One mirror was clear, bright, and pristine. 2. The other was covered in thick dust and grime. "See these mirrors," said the sage. ”Both were made to reflect images. One does so beautifully, while the other one fails. Why is that?" The nobleman retorted, "It is evident, the dusty mirror needs cleaning!" The sage nodded, "Precisely! Every soul is indeed a mirror reflecting the divine. But over time, it gathers the dust of: • the ego • desires • prejudices • ignorance. A spiritual guide doesn't add anything to the soul; instead, he helps clean these impurities so the divine attributes can be reflected clearly." ***For more about Sufism click our website link: www.thesufi.com
