Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was truly a people’s artist. Hailing from a small town of Faisalabad with a thin and feeble voice, he rose the genre Qawwali and Sufi music to such level that it became part of Hollywood blockbuster movie soundtracks. Here is a rare public performance of the Emperor Qawwal which shows both the simplicity and greatness of Shah of Sufi Music. Download at http://ift.tt/2ruxblk #qawwali #sufi #nusrat

Noor Jehan, often called Mallika Taranum (The Queen of Melody) in Pakistan, once mentioned in an interview that Faiz Ahmed Faiz in a mehfil asked her to sing from his most popular poems 'Raqeeb Se'. Noor Jehan was hesitant how she can sing without a tune composed. Faiz insisted to just create any extempore melody. Obliging the great poet, she performed it without any background music instruments. Faiz loved the poem so much that he said I have given this poem to Noor Jehan, as after her singing, his own recitation will not look good at all. Qutub ul Aqtab Hazrat Khwaja Syed Muhammad Qutbuddin Bakhtiar Kaki R.A Saying about the life of a Sufi…. A Sufi must eat very little. If he eats full-belly, he is a slave of his Nafs. He must eat only to retain sufficient vitality to enable him to keep his body and soul together, so that he may be able to perform his devotional duties conveniently and successfully. A Sufi's dress must be very simple, free of all pomp and show. If he wears his dress for the sake of show, he is a dacoit in the path of renunciation. A Sufi must talk and sleep as little as possible to avoid all sorts of worthless worldly entanglements. Hazrat Bayazid Bastami strived unsuccessfully in the devotion of God for 70 years at a stretch in order to get 'nearness to God'. He, however, succeeded in attaining this 'nearness-to-God' only when he threw away even his last earthen bowl (aabkhara) in which he used to drink water and his only leather 'khirqa' (cloak) in order to complete his renouncement of the world, thus depending absolutely upon, and surrendering himself completely to, the will, pleasure and mercy of God.

Translation: People who pine to merge with God do not get a wink of sleep at night. The Master always tends and protects his disciples as a gardener nurses his seedlings. In his divine presence, he nourishes them with his merciful glance. It is only appropriate to use the name ‘Master’ for someone who shows you the Lord within your own body, O Bahoo.......

Khusrau's first meeting with Hazrat Nizamuddin Aulia R.A It is said that Khusrau, at the age of eight years, was coerced by his mother to visit the saint's khaneqah (monastary) for the first time. When he reached there, he didn't enter at once - he wanted to test him out. He sat down at the gate and composed the following lines in his heart : Tu aan shahi ke ber aiwan-e qasrat Kabutar gar nasheenad, baaz gardad Ghareeb-e mustamand-e ber der aamed Be-yaayad andaroon, ya baaz gardad (You are a king at the gate of whose palace / even a pigeon becomes a hawk. / A poor traveller has come to your gate, / should he enter, or should he return?) It is said that Nizamuddin Aulia at once asked one of his servants to go out at the gate and narrate the following lines to a boy who is sitting there : Be-yaayad andaroon mard-e haqeeqat Ke ba ma yek nafas hamraaz gardad Agar abla buvad aan mard-e naadan Azaan raah-e ke aamad baaz gardad (Oh you the man of reality, come inside / so you become for a while my confidant / but if the one who enters is foolish / then he should return the way he came.) Hearing this Khusrau decided that he has come to the right place and entered.
